Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharshan were ruthless against the crippled Chennai bowling unit and went onto register a 210 run-stand to share the record for the highest opening stand in IPL history.

The Gujarat Titans’ opening pair of Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharshan found their mojo once again to score their respective centuries from the top of the order against the Chennai Super Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Sudharshan was sent back up the batting order as Wriddhiman Saha the designated opener alongside Gill was out for the game due to a niggle he picked up recently.

But this ended up being the change that GT’s batting unit desperately needed as the pair ended up registering a partnership of 210 runs in just 104 deliveries to completely outclass the already crippled Chennai bowling attack.

Their 210-run stand also makes it in the record books as the fourth-highest partnership in the history of the Indian Premier League going past the Kings XI Punjab’s (now renamed as Punjab Kings) Aussie duo Adam Gilchrist and Shaun Marsh’s 206-run stand for the second wicket against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

The first and second positions for the highest partnerships in the history of the tournament belong to the star-studded pair of Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers for RCB where the two managed to score 229 and an unbeaten 215 against Gujarat Lions (defunct) and Mumbai Indians in 2016 and 2015 respectively.

P’ship Batting Pair Opposition Year
229 AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli Gujarat Lions 2016
215* AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli Mumbai Indians 2015
210* Quinton de Kock, KL Rahul Kolkata Knight Riders 2022
210 Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharshan Chennai Super Kings 2024
206 Adam Gilchrist and Shaun Marsh Royal Challengers Bengaluru 2011
204 Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli Delhi Daredevils 2012

Among opening batters, GT’s opening stand now shares the record with the LSG duo of Quinton de Kock and KL Rahul who also scored a 210-run stand. However, the LSG pair went unbeaten while GT’s opening stand was broken in the 17.2 overs.

Gill took the initiative through the powerplay overs scoring 29 runs in 13 balls while Sudharshan took a more steady approach scoring 28 in 23 deliveries as GT ended up with 58 runs in the first six overs.

The left-hander managed to pick up the pace as he targetted Jadeja and smashed him for a boundary and a maximum in the ninth over bringing up his half-century.

The duo then attacked the pace on offer by Simarjeet Singh, smacking him for 23 runs with three maximums and the boundary coming in the 11th over and did not look back since as batters managed to bring up their respective centuries

While GT’s chances of making it to the playoffs are highly improbable, they will remain positive with how their two batting stars have performed today and will take it into account for the new season, where they will likely look to rebuild in the mega auctions.
