GST Council Meeting Starts; Key Matters on Agenda

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is chairing the 49th meeting of the GST Council

The GST Council meeting began here on Saturday and is likely to discuss matters including setting up of appellate tribunals and mechanism to check tax evasion in pan masala and gutkha business, among others. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is chairing the 49th meeting of the GST Council.

The Finance Ministry said in a statement, “Union Minister of State for Finance Shri @mppchaudhary along with Union Minister of State for Finance, Finance Ministers of States and UTs (with legislature) and senior officers of Central Government and States are also participating in the meeting. ” Tweet.

Sources said the items which could not be discussed in the last meeting of the Council on December 17, 2022, will top the agenda of Saturday’s meeting. He said the report of the Group of Ministers (GoM) headed by Odisha Finance Minister Niranjan Pujari on the probe into tax evasion by the pan masala and gutkha industry may also be discussed.

A GoM on the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) was constituted in July last year under the chairmanship of Haryana Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala.

The GoM has suggested that the tribunal should consist of a retired Supreme Court judge as chairman, besides two judicial members and one technical member each from the Center and states.
