Greedy husband jailed for 10 years: Husband did not like the car received in dowry, then the wife started torturing, the woman had committed suicide

A Kerala court has sentenced her husband to 10 years in jail in connection with the suicide case of medical student Vismaya. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 12.50 lakh on Kiran Kumar.

The court had on Monday convicted Kiran Kumar of dowry and abetment to suicide. Vismaya had committed suicide at her in-laws’ house in June last year. Additional District and Sessions Judge-1 Sujit KN had convicted the husband for the offense of dowry harassment under various provisions of IPC and Dowry Prohibition Act.

Vismaya, 22, was found dead at her husband’s house in Sasthaamkotta in Kollam district on June 21, 2021.

Vismaya’s father told reporters outside the court on Monday that his daughter had got justice. He has no words to express his gratitude for the efforts of the prosecution and the investigation team.

The court had reserved its verdict in the matter on May 17. The Kerala Police, in its 500-page chargesheet, had said that Vismaya had committed suicide due to dowry harassment.

A day before the incident, Vismaya had sent pictures of injuries and assault marks on her body to her relatives on WhatsApp along with her alleged torture over Kumar’s dowry.

Vismaya’s father said that during the marriage in 2020, Kiran Kumar was given gold, more than one acre of land and a car worth Rs 10 lakh as dowry. But Kiran Kumar did not like the car and wanted Rs 10 lakh in cash. When Kiran was told that this was not possible, he started torturing Vismaya.
