‘Great to have Ross Taylor when I achieved that milestone’: Centurion Conway will remember for a long time

New Zealand batsman Devon Conway on Saturday said scoring his maiden Test century at home is an “extremely special feeling”. He was appreciating the presence of veteran batsman Ross Taylor at the crease when he completed his century.

Conway kicked off in brilliant fashion in 2022, scoring 122 as New Zealand reached 258/5 at stumps on the first day of the first Test against Bangladesh at the Bay Oval. Conway also became the sixth Test batsman to score a century in the first innings in domestic and overseas matches.

“It’s a very special feeling. I think today, playing in New Zealand in the first Test match, it was very special to be there. And then personally, when I got to that position, Ross Taylor was there with me.” It was a great feeling to be in. He was so positive. Told me to soak in it, and congratulated me. It’ll be in my memory for a very long time,” Conway said at the virtual press conference.

The 30-year-old was returning to the team in the Men’s T20 World Cup semi-final against England after suffering a hand injury that forced him to miss the Test against India. Conway was dismissed for zero in the warm-up match against Bangladesh. Despite the uneven build-up of the series, Conway managed to keep New Zealand on top.

“I haven’t had a proper hit in the last eight weeks, so it was good to contribute. I probably had four to five tough sessions in and around that practice game. It was a little disappointing that I was more in the middle of that practice game. Wasn’t able to spend the time but it still gave me an opportunity to go into the nets and try and drill down how I want to go about things if I get selected for the first test. Hopefully we can We can redeem tomorrow as a team.”

In addition to Conway’s 122, he added 138 runs for the second wicket with opener Will Young, who scored 52 runs. Both had to work hard to stay at the crease and then go for the shots.

“I think both of us, we both decided that we needed to be as patient as possible – recognize that the Bangladesh bowlers were bowling really well at the time. And the surface was assisting them as well, so We had to earn the right to start playing those more aggressive shots later in the day.”
