Panaji: Union Home Minister Amit Shah On Thursday, the government aims to make it mandatory for forensic teams to visit the scene of crimes that can carry a prison term of more than six years.
He also said that there is a shortage of trained manpower in the field of forensic science, which affects the conviction rate and leads to pile-up of cases.
was addressing a gathering at the foundation stone laying ceremony of Shah National Forensic Science University (NFSU) in Dharbandora village South Goa.
“We need to instill fear in the minds of hardened criminals that they will be behind bars. To do that, you need manpower trained in forensic science, which is lacking,” he said.
He said the aim is to ensure that forensic team visits would be mandatory for offenses that could entail imprisonment of more than six years.
“To do this, we should have teams in all 600 districts of the country. All districts should have small forensic science laboratories and each deputy SP level should have a mobile forensic van,” the minister said.
He said that 30,000 to 40,000 people are needed to set up such infrastructure.
“How can we create such an infrastructure? That’s why we need institutions that provide forensic education,” Shah said.

“I feel honored that I was the Home Minister (of Gujarat) in his cabinet at that time and even now when National Forensic Science University has been launched, I am the Home Minister,” he said.
