Officials said the foreign and finance ministries will brief the leaders of various political parties in Parliament on the situation in Sri Lanka on Tuesday. Citing an office memorandum, officials said the briefing by both the ministries has been scheduled for the evening of July 19, the second day of the monsoon session of Parliament.

earlier in the day, India Assured Sri Lanka that it will continue to support democracy, stability and economic recovery in the country, which is at a turning point in the midst of an unprecedented political crisis and economic turmoil. Indian High Commissioner Gopal Baglay gave this assurance to Speaker of Parliament Mahinda Yapa Abhayawardene during his meeting with the Sri Lankan leader.

The meeting came a day after Speaker Abhaywardene accepted the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Sri Lanka is facing its worst economic crisis in seven decades, with severe foreign exchange shortages hampering imports of essential goods, including food, fuel and medicines.

The economic crisis also led to a political crisis in the country following a popular rebellion against the government, forcing Rajapaksa to leave the country and resign from the presidency. Sri Lankan lawmakers met on Saturday to begin the process of choosing a new leader to replace Rajapaksa, who is now in Singapore.

The island nation, off the tip of southeast India, needs around USD 5 billion over the next six months to meet basic needs for its 22 million people, who are battling long queues, worsening shortages and power cuts . India has been a major source of foreign aid to Sri Lanka this year.
