Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Saturday launched the ‘India Waterpilot-Pilot-Scale Start-up Challenge’, under which the government will select 100 start-ups and give them Rs 20 lakh each as funding support as well as mentorship. will be provided. said in a statement.

According to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, the aim of the new initiative is to empower start-ups in the water sector to grow through innovation and design that will promote sustainable economic growth and create employment opportunities.

The initiative was launched by Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri at an event here under the ministry’s Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0.

According to a statement from the ministry, Puri emphasized the important role being played by start-ups and assured them of full and proactive support from the government.

“Start-ups are the flavor of the season, as the number of ‘unicorns’ in the country has increased by leaps and bounds,” the minister said.

He said that the success of the government’s schemes largely depends on the role and contribution of the stakeholders and others in the ecosystem, adding that the feedback of the stakeholders in the water sector is important for the formulation of government programmes.

Puri said that AMRUT 2.0 is a transformative and unique scheme with a huge outlay of over Rs 2.77 lakh crore. He said that this scheme will ensure water security in the country, reduce its transportation cost, reduce groundwater pollution and increase water use efficiency.

The Union Minister also said that for the success of the mission, start-ups have to play a meaningful role by bringing innovative ideas, technology, innovative delivery mechanism etc.

In the event, several start-ups engaged in water from different parts of the country gave their presentations with innovative ideas and cutting edge technologies, the statement mentioned.

The Minister and other officials also visited the exhibition on water sector organized by various stakeholders engaged in water management.
