The Department of Telecom has directed to take action against those who have more than 9 SIMs. The department has issued orders to re-verify SIMs of customers having 9 connections across the country and 6 connections in the North-East state including Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and disconnect them if they are not verified. These orders have been issued on December 7.

What if you have more than 9 SIMs in your name?
According to the order issued by the Department of Telecommunications, in case customers are found with more SIM cards than allowed, they will be given the option to keep the SIM of their choice and switch off the remaining. The department said that if more than the specified number of SIM cards are found with a customer, then all SIMs will be re-verified.

The sim will be closed on verification and
The department has ordered all telecom operators to send notifications to users who have more than 9 SIM cards. All outgoing calls to such SIM cards should be terminated within 30 days. Whereas incoming calls have been ordered to be closed within 45 days. However, mobile SIM users will also have the option to surrender the extra SIM.

If the notified SIM is not verified by the subscriber, then such SIM has been ordered to be discontinued within 60 days. If the subscriber is international roaming, an additional 30 days will be given to sick and disabled persons.

Steps taken to investigate criminal incidents
The DoT has taken this step to investigate the incidents of financial crimes, objectionable calls and fraudulent activities. The department has asked telecom companies to delete all those mobile numbers from the database which are not in use as per the rules.

KYC required for SIM
In September this year itself, the government had changed the SIM card KYC rules itself. Accordingly, the need to fill a physical form for getting a new connection or converting a prepaid number to postpaid or postpaid to prepaid was done away with.

If you have to get a new mobile number or telephone connection then your KYC will be completely digital. That is, you will not have to submit any kind of paper for KYC. According to the new rules, you will be able to do self-KYC through the app of the SIM provider. For this you have to pay only Re 1 .
