AHMEDABAD: Government of India has approved Bharat Biotech’s manufacturing facility at Ankleshwar in South Gujarat For the production of Covaxin, India’s first indigenously developed Covid-19 vaccine.
Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya tweeted on Tuesday, “Government of India has approved Bharat Biotech’s vaccine manufacturing facility for production of Covaxin at Ankleshwar, Gujarat.”
In his tweet, Mandaviya said that in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘vaccine for all and free for all’, the move will increase vaccine availability and accelerate the world’s largest vaccine campaign.
As part of its efforts to ramp up covaccine production capacity, Bharat Biotech announced in May this year that it would use its subsidiary Chiron Behring Vaccine’s facility in Ankleshwar.
“Bharat Biotech plans to produce 200 million doses of Covaxin at the Ankleshwar plant and product availability at this plant will begin in the fourth quarter of 2021,” the company said in May.
Bharat Biotech acquired the Ankleshwar facility from GlaxoSmithKline Asia as part of its acquisition of Chiron Behring Vaccines.
Bharat Biotech recently said, “From early June, manufacturing of Covaxin has begun at our sites in Malur, Karnataka and Ankleshwar, Gujarat, before engineering batches were also executed to study device functionality ”
According to the company, products made from these facilities will be available for supply in September. This is based on the company’s 120-day timeline for manufacturing, testing, release, regulatory approval and distribution.
in a written reply to Rajya Sabha A few days ago, Mandaviya said that the government has also facilitated technology transfer of covaccine production to the Gujarat Covid Vaccine Consortium (GCVC). The association is led by the Gujarat Biotechnology Research Center (GBRC) of the state government.

Minister said that under the Department of Biotechnology Union Ministry of Science and Technology Indian COVID-19 Vaccine Development Mission has been launched. “Under the mission, facility enhancement of two Central Public Sector Enterprises including Bharat Biotech and a State Public Sector Enterprise and Halfkine Biopharmaceutical Corporation Limited, Mumbai, Indian Immunologicals Limited, Hyderabad, and Bharat Immunological and Biological Limited, Bulandshahr, have been given support for production of Covaxin,” he said.
