Kit Harington admitted his interest in playing negative roles as he has grown tired of portraying the hero in his films.
Kit Harington goes full villain mode as he takes on the role of a brutal killer in his upcoming project Blood for Dust. The actor was hunting for such roles after his tenure as the heroic Jon Snow on HBO’s Game of Thrones in 2019. In a recent interaction with Entertainment Weekly, the actor admitted his interest in playing negative roles as he has grown tired of portraying the hero in his films.
Leaning into playing the grey-shade roles, Harington said, “If I look at the roles I’ve taken since playing an out-and-out hero in ‘Game of Thrones,’ I have to admit there seems to be some sort of pushback about playing a hero. I’m not so interested in heroic roles, and if I am, they have to be pretty anti-hero-ish..”
Further admitting the hardships while playing heroes, the Game Of Thrones actor added, “My heart goes out to people playing heroes. They’re fucking hard to play and to make interesting. [Playing] a guy who is doing all the right things and is driven by being good, it’s harder to do that. And I think people who do it successfully, who play classically heroic roles, are very talented actors.” In the same interaction, Harington called the ‘faulty’ and ‘wrong’ characters more interesting and noted that it is harder to empathise with the negative roles.
The actor confirmed earlier this month that the Game of Thrones spinoff for HBO has been shelved. Notably, Harington was preparing to reprise Jon Snow for the show centered on the heroic character. However, it seems that the actor’s resistance to heroes drove him away from playing one of the most-loved characters again.
Speaking of Harington’s Blood for Dust, the film is scheduled to arrive in theaters and on digital platforms on April 19. In the film, Scoot McNairy and Josh Lucas will be essaying the pivotal roles. For those uninitiated, Game of Thrones’ end saw Harington’s Jon Snow’s exile from Westeros as he makes his way to the Haunted Forest with his dire wolf Ghost and the Wildlings to embark on a new journey.
