Ahmed Murtaza Abbasi, accused of attacking security personnel outside Gorakhpur’s Gorakhnath temple, was brought to the Anti-Terrorism Squad headquarters in Lucknow for questioning on Wednesday, officials said. Abbasi is currently in police custody for seven days.

According to senior police officials, Mortaza will be questioned about his activities and his ties to the people behind the attack.

Additional director general (law and order) Prashant Kumar said, “We are trying to ascertain every aspect of the incident. The arrested accused also have links with people or organisations.”

Meanwhile, senior police officials have claimed that the 30-year-old chemical engineering graduate saw hate speech by Muslim fundamentalists on his laptop.

The investigators have confiscated the said laptop and mobile phone of the accused to collect digital evidence.

The case is being investigated by a joint team of Special Task Force (STF) of UP Police and Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). Investigators suspect Abbasi was self-radicalised.

Officials are investigating whether he was further directed by a handler.

IIT graduate Abbasi tried to enter the Gorakhnath temple complex on Sunday evening.

When the security personnel tried to stop him, he attacked them with a sickle, injuring two constables of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC). Abbasi was soon overpowered by other security personnel and arrested.

The security personnel confiscated the sickle and a knife used in the attack from him.

The Gorakhnath temple complex also houses the residence of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who is the chief priest of the temple.

The CM was not in the temple at the time of the attack. The searches were conducted at different places in eastern UP’s Kushinagar, Siddharth Nagar and Maharajganj districts, where Abbasi had stayed in the recent past.

Teams have also been sent to Mumbai and Jamnagar in Gujarat.

According to senior police officials, Abbasi completed his education in Mumbai and later worked with a multinational firm in Jamnagar, Gujarat for some time.
