GOP’s DeVos says she won’t seek Michigan governorship

Former US Education Secretary Betsy DeVos said on Tuesday she would not run for governor of Michigan in 2022, stoking speculation about a Trump administration cabinet member and partner in one of the state’s most influential Republican couples.

I am not running for governor, DeVos told The Detroit News, which previously reported the announcement. This is not going to happen to me. I appreciate that some people are interested, but I think the rumor and interest really only serves to highlight how desperate Michiganders are for a new leadership.”

Advisers for DeVos, 63, said that despite weeks of chatter in Michigan’s political class, he never weighed in on a campaign to challenge Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

Although a billionaire able to finance a campaign and the former chair of the state party with major connections, DeVos would have faced complications in the Republican primary and general election.

Despite four years in Trump’s cabinet, DeVos stepped down in January, a day after the deadly US Capitol siege, blaming the defeated president’s false claims that the 2020 election was stolen to fuel tensions as Congress Prepared to certify the 2020 presidential election.

There is no mistake that your rhetoric has had an impact on the situation, and this is the inflection point for me,” she said in her resignation letter.

Meanwhile, some Trump loyalists who backed the former president’s claims and organized a Washington visit of Michigan supporters to protest the result, have taken a seat in the state party’s inner circle.

In a general election, DeVos would carry the stuff Trump, who won the state in 2016 but lost less of it in 2020.

DeVos will also be the face of her husband Dick’s decade-long effort to curb Union power in the long-constructing state.

Dick DeVos, Michigan’s losing candidate for governor in 2006, successfully lobbied Republican Gov. Rick Snyder in 2012 to sign legislation preventing unions from paying employees dues as a condition of employment. DeVoses later focused on his political fundraising group, the Michigan Freedom Fund, tp., who defended Republican legislators who supported the bill.

Still, DeVos is respected in the party, and after speaking at a Midland County Republican Party committee meeting last month, talk of a gubernatorial bid began, not a typical spot for the former cabinet secretary.

DeVos spoke at the meeting at the invitation of US Representative John Mulner, the aide said, an appearance aide said he had had time to acknowledge since leaving Washington recently.

Democrats, with whom DeVos remains unpopular, tried to capitalize on the rumours.

Primarily, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat who was expected to seek a second term, used it to raise money.

DeVos is a threat to public education and the future of our state, and we need to be prepared to counter her billionaire-funded campaign,” Whitmer was quoted as saying in a campaign fundraising email last week.

Republican James Craig, the recently retired Detroit police chief, has announced his candidacy for governor in 2022.
