Google to start removing old apps from Google Pay Store from November 1: Why it’s important

Google Play Store is known to preserve old games and apps even if they are not supported on newer OS versions. The company is now changing that and has said it will no longer have apps that don’t target the API level within two years of the latest Android version. The company announced in a blog post that it will go Apple’s way from November 1 and remove apps that haven’t been updated for a while.

blog post from Google Said that from November 1, 2022, the company will remove those apps google play store which do not target API level within two years of the latest major Android version. It added that the apps will not be available for discovery or installation for new users who have devices running Android OS versions higher than the target API level of the app.

This means that Google will only keep apps on the Google Play Store that keep updating its Application Programming Interface API with the Android version to implement the new features introduced with newer versions of Android. However, sometimes, new API versions come with problems like restrictions, which is why some apps don’t stick with the Android version for as long as possible.

Google already requires apps to target recent Android releases. Currently, it android 11 (API level 30) will be extended further Android 12 (API level 31) in August this year. However, this applies to apps that are still under development and update, while older discarded apps and games were kept as long as they comply with Play Store policies.

This comes as a security measure from California-based company Mountain View as it would require apps to be compatible with the most recent permissions and restrictions that came with the latest Android security update.
