When you open the updated app, it will show busy places around your location with a tag of “Busy Zones”. This can be useful when you are planning a trip to that area or are going to cross that area while traveling to another place.
Tap on the label “Busy Zone” and it will bring up a chart that shows how busy the area will be at various points in the day. It will also show restaurants, shops and other notable places around that location, and with photos to help you get a layer of the ground, literally.
“We combine live engagement trends from locations in an area, such as stores, restaurants, parks, cafes, etc., to determine its overall engagement level. These trends indicate how busy an area is typically – and when it is near or busiest we highlight it on Google Maps as a “busy area”. To protect the privacy of our users, our systems do not calculate engagement information for residential locations such as homes or apartments,” Google says on its support page.
Google says it has put in place a number of protective measures for communities. for example, area busy Google will keep a person’s location a secret with the help of a feature called “differential privacy”. Also, area engagement will never display the total number of people in an area. Also engagement is determined based on a predefined “area of interest”; It won’t display exactly where the crowd is. Google has also assured users that it will not collect area occupancy data about residential locations.
