Google Maps brings plus codes for Indians to share precise location, but what are plus codes?

The new feature allows Maps users to save and share their home address with a plus code. It will help users to get accurate digital addresses of their residences, which they can use for faster delivery of their food, medicines and parcels, without sharing any landmarks or voice instructions. Users can also share the Plus code for their address with their friends and families for easy navigation. So while this is a useful feature, you may be wondering, what are these “plus codes”? So plus codes are free, open-source digital addresses meant to provide accurate location details. Plus code for your home can be generated through Google Maps, Street addresses for people or places that have no address. Plus codes on Google Maps are based on latitude and longitude, and are displayed as alphanumeric codes with numbers and letters. Google says that with the Plus code, people can get delivery, access emergency and social services, or simply help other people find them. These are much smaller than traditional coordinates containing only 20 alphanumeric characters and are easy to share. Plus codes also work whether you are online or offline. Plus codes aren’t available for public use as nearby places on the app and can’t be seen by anyone browsing through the map.

To use the plus code, the Google Maps app shows users a new “Use your current location” option when saving a “Home” location. It will use your phone’s geolocation to generate a plus code. Its purpose is to give people your accurate information without sharing your name and email id. If you already have a location saved as your Home on Google Maps, you can access the location with a plus code for accurate details.

Plus Codes was introduced by Google in 2015 as a solution for finding hard-to-find places around the world. In 2020, Google Maps introduced the ability to allow users to share their current locations using a plus code by tapping on a blue dot on the app.

India This is the first place where Google has introduced the new feature with plus codes. It has been rolled out only for Android users at the moment, but in the coming days it will be available for iPhone users. Google says that since the feature was rolled out in India about a month ago, more than 300,000 people are already using Plus codes for their home addresses.
