Video footage of garbage on the beach went viral and people urged to help clean it up. Some villagers also came together and tried their best to collect the same.
Mascarenhas, who introduced the idea of ​​sand dune parks, for world Bank Rs 3 crore was sanctioned for five beaches, he said, adding, “We are trying to restore and protect the sand dunes, but government agencies are doing the opposite.”
He said that during this time of the year, the coast of Goa is directly affected by the waves as the winds are perpendicular to the coast. “Waste dumped in rivers and water bodies end up in the sea. Due to unrest, it is washed ashore,” he said.
“The scientific way is to isolate it. Dumping it on dunes or behind vegetation is a gross violation of all environmental regulations. Huge amounts of garbage are scattered in the bushes and are now covered with wind-blown sand,” said Mascarenhas .
Meanwhile, Nelson Fernandes, an officer on special duty to the tourism minister, said he had directed the beach cleaning agency Karnataka Commercial and Industrial Corporation (KCIC) to clear the garbage within two working days.
