Goa: High level meeting, action against Lobo and Kamat ‘soon’, Digambar ‘hurt’ by Congress remarks

Ahead of the Goa Assembly session, Speaker Ramesh Tavdkar on Monday said that he has not received any information about the ‘split’ in the state Congress Legislature Party.

A senior party leader had earlier said that on Sunday, five of the total 11 Congress MLAs from the state – Michael Lobo, Digambar Kamat, Kedar Naik, Rajesh Faldesai and Deliala Lobo – went incommunicado. The Congress later removed Lobo from the post of Leader of Opposition and said that the new LOP would be named before the assembly session.

Sources told CNN-News18 that a high-level meeting of Goa Congress was going to take place soon, and “action” will be taken against former CM and MLA Digambar Kamat and LOP Michael Lobo soon.

Congress’ Goa desk in-charge Dinesh Gundu Rao on Sunday alleged that Lobo and Kamat were conspiring with the BJP to create a split in the Congress.

Till Monday morning, five Congress MLAs were with the party in the 40-member Goa Assembly, while five others remained inaccessible. Another legislator, Alexo Sequeira, was at home and promised his support to the party.

A senior Congress leader said they have shifted five MLAs who were with the party to an undisclosed location so that there is no further “split” in the organisation.

On Monday, when reporters asked Tavdkar about the “split” in the Congress, the Speaker said, “I have no information.” I was preparing for the monsoon session of the assembly in my office on Sunday.”

When asked whether he was informed about the change of Leader of Opposition by the Congress Legislature Party, he also replied in the negative.

Meanwhile, Kamat said he was “hurt” by Rao’s comments. “I led the party from the front in 2022, but after the election I was humiliated because the LoP was changed,” he said.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Sunday asked senior party leader Mukul Wasnik to visit Goa to “monitor the latest political developments” in the state.

In a late night tweet, AICC General Secretary, Organisation, KC Venugopal said, “Congress President has asked Shri @MukulWasnik, MP to visit Goa to monitor the latest political developments in the state.”

The development comes amid speculation that some Congress MLAs may join the saffron party. Exactly three years ago on this day, a group of 10 Congress MLAs left the party and joined the BJP.

The development comes close on the heels of political turmoil in neighboring Maharashtra, where the ruling Shiv Sena split following a rebellion by senior leader Eknath Shinde after Uddhav Thackeray resigned from the top post in the last week of June. Became Chief Minister. ,
