Goa: Cortalim locals threaten stir over water supply | Goa News – Times of India

PANAJI: Plagued by water woes, residents of Cortalim have now threatened to come out on the streets in protest if regular supply is not restored. The residents said that while their taps are running dry, the neighboring areas of Vasco, Dabolim, Mormugao and the vicinity have been receiving seamless water supply.
“There has been a water shortage for months now, however, over the past few days, there has been absolutely no water supply due to issues with the filtration system. If the department finds it so hard to resolve this issue, they can show the residents the location of the valves – which we can turn on and off responsibly,” former sarpanch Raymond DeSa said.
“There are business establishments, offices, the market and public toilets in Cortalim. Over the past few days, these toilets have had to be kept shut due to lack of water and a stench is emanating from the toilet bowls. This is posing a health hazard to us,” one of the residents said.
Many areas are facing low water pressure due to which their overhead tanks are not filling up, forcing residents to store water, which runs out after some time.
“There are solutions to this problem such as the PWD supplying water via tankers until supply is restored. However, we are being deprived of this too. In such a situation, we will have no choice but to come out on the streets and hold a dharna,” one resident said.
Meanwhile, attributing the water shortage to a problem with incoming supply from the Selaulim dam, a PWD official told TOI,
“Earlier over 80 MLD water was being released which has now dropped to about 65 MLD. Water supply will be restored in a few days.”
