Goa Congress Crisis: Goa Assembly Speaker Ramesh Tavkar on Sunday canceled the notification for the election of the deputy speaker’s post, which was scheduled to be held on July 12.

The move comes amid speculation that some Congress MLAs in the 40-member House may join the ruling BJP.

Amidst rumours, Congress MLA Alexo Sequeira said, “MLA meeting is going on in a hotel, there are 7 MLAs. I was not called here by the high command, only for a courtesy meeting. Rumors (about MLAs leaving for BJP) I’m all over, what’s to be done. I can pledge for myself, can’t say for anyone else.”

Meanwhile, on the eve of the two-week assembly session starting Monday, Goa Congress chief Amit Patkar rubbished plans of some of his MLAs to join the BJP, saying such rumors were being spread by the ruling party. Huh.

In an order issued by Legislature Secretary Namrata Ulman, it was informed that the notification dated July 8 under Rule 308 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Goa Legislative Assembly has been withdrawn.

The order further read, “Therefore, the notice of nomination for the election of Deputy Speaker issued under Rules 9(2) of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business of the Goa Legislative Assembly is also withdrawn.”
