Goa Assembly Elections: Two couples named in BJP’s list, Deputy Chief Minister’s wife announced to contest as independent

Two couples Rane and Monserrate made it to the first list of candidates announced by the BJP on Thursday for the Goa Assembly elections. Deputy Chief Minister Chandrakant Kavlekar’s wife Savitri had also staked claim for the ticket, but her name was not in the list following which she announced that she would contest as an independent. The ruling party announced candidates for 34 of the 40 seats for the February 14 elections in Goa.

At present, both BJP MLAs Atanasio Monserrate and Jennifer Monserrate have been given tickets. Another ‘power couple’ Health Minister Vishwajit Rane and his wife Divya have also got tickets. Divya Rane is making a new beginning in politics. Atanasio Monserrate, who won the Panaji bypoll on a Congress ticket in 2019 after the death of the then Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, had joined the BJP in the same year.

Along with him nine other Congress MLAs, including Monserrate’s wife Jennifer, who represented the Talegao seat, joined the saffron party. The couple will contest the upcoming elections from their existing seats.
