GMC: Strict action: GMC bans cross-gender massage at spas and unisex salons. Guwahati News – Times of India

GUWAHATI: In order to stop the illegal activities allegedly being carried out in spas, unisex parlors and salons of the city, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) on Sunday issued a number of strict guidelines, including a ban on cross-gender therapy or massage, as well as the purchase of business licenses.
The Guwahati Police has caught several employees red-handed allegedly indulging in prostitution during raids at various spas and unisex salons.
GMC commissioner Devashish Sharma said, “After receiving several complaints from the civil society the rules have been laid down to prevent malpractice or illegal activities. To obtain a business license, the owners have to follow the guidelines.”
The GMC has also ordered that the main entrances of parlors or salons should be transparent from now on. According to the new rules, there cannot be any special room or chamber inside a salon or parlor.
There are around 300 spas, unisex salons and parlors in the city. With the increase in the number of such facilities in the last few years, incidents of illegal activities in the city have also reportedly increased.
“Such activities have been deemed injurious to a civil society and the GMC is bound to respect public morals and the laws governing a civil society,” Sharma said.
In a raid conducted by GMC’s health and enforcement wing last Wednesday, the civic body sealed a salon in Ulubari area of the city for violating rules and bye-laws. The salon was running its business without any valid trade licence.
