GTI 2023Afghanistan continues to top the list of countries affected by terrorism in the new Global Terrorism Index report. Afghanistan topped the list for the fourth consecutive year, despite a 75 per cent and 58 per cent drop in attacks and deaths, respectively. India ranked 13th on the index, showing a slight decrease from the previous year. Indian respondents refrained from ranking war and terrorism as the top threats to their daily security, despite the country being one of the 25 most affected countries on the index.

According to the GTI report, Afghanistan is set to record 633 deaths in 2022, despite a decline of 866 in terrorism-related deaths in 2022. Following the Taliban’s takeover of the nation, the GTI claimed that the Islamic State–Khorasan (Daesh) had become the “most active terrorist”. group” in Afghanistan. The group was responsible for 422 deaths in 2022, or about 67% of all terrorism-related deaths in the country as a whole.

Pakistan sees huge jump in terror attacks

Pakistan saw the second largest increase in terrorism-related deaths globally last year, killing a total of 643 people. The highest annual increase in deaths was observed in Pakistan during the last ten years. Military people made up at least 55% of all casualties of terrorism. As a result of the high increase in mortality, it climbed up four places to reach the sixth position in the index, according to the research. The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) accounted for 36% of Pakistan’s militancy-related deaths, a nine-fold increase from the previous year. The Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), often referred to as the Pakistan Taliban, has reportedly been surpassed by the BLA as Pakistan’s deadliest terrorist organization.

What is India standing on?

The report listed India among the 25 worst terrorism-affected countries with a high impact of terrorism and was placed at the 13th position. However, it also notes that 56 out of 120 countries surveyed had no answer to choose war and terror as the biggest threats to their daily security. In many of India’s border areas, there are many low-intensity conflicts, yet the majority of the population lives elsewhere in the country. India’s GTI score was 7.175, while Afghanistan’s score, which leads the index, was 8.822.
