Global PC shipments up 45% year-on-year in Q1 2021, Lenovo retains top spot

Lenovo took the top spot again in Q1 2021 by shipping around 18.1 million units, garnering 24 percent of the market share.

Global PC shipments grew 45 per cent year-on-year (YoY) to 75.6 million in the first quarter (January to March) of 2021 due to strong demand across categories and a lower base in the same period last year on account of COVID-19. -19 outbreak, market analyst Counterpoint notes. Its new report which expects a continued reduction in semiconductors worldwide in the second half of 2021, claims PC shipments were down 14 percent sequentially from Q4 2020 due to seasonality in volumes.

With 24 percent market share, Lenovo Gained 24 per cent of the market share, shipping around 18.1 million units, again topping the Q1 2021. Himachal Pradesh Shipped 17.3 million units in the first quarter (23 percent share), followed by Pit With 12.5 million units (17 percent share). The overall momentum of the PC market was primarily driven by growth in gaming notebooks and rising demand for work from home and study from home segments, which encouraged sales of Chromebooks. Apple shipped 6.8 million units of its MacBooks to secure 9 percent of global markets. Counterpoint said PC shipments will remain “resilient” with increased demand from the first quarter of 2021, which will expand into the second quarter of 2021. The report claims that the top six sellers will dominate the market with over 85 per cent share. “Move into H2 2021, the momentum will continue from the previous half and will peak with demand for back-to-school (there will be some virtual classes) as well as an increase in demand from H1 2021. Premium models with higher ASPs will be larger. Promotions, which may reduce the Chromebook’s market share in the H2 to some extent,” Counterpoint said. Overall, the next quarter is expected to see a 16.3 percent year-on-year growth with global shipments reaching around 333 million.

Market researchers believe that ODMs’ (original design manufacturers) component list levels are relatively high, but they still lack CPUs and other key components. As for PC CPUs, components in many sub-section products were said to be gradually improved towards the end of the H1. However, some vendors said that demand for audio codec ICs and LAN chips remained unsatisfied and would remain so in the second half of this year. WiFi SoC also faces relatively low inventory levels, which will prove to be a drag on 2021 global PC shipments.
