Global Family Day: History
The idea behind Global Family Day began to germinate in 1997 with a children’s book that envisions a day where there will be only peace and no war. The title of the book was ‘One Day in Peace – 1 January 2000.’ The United Nations General Assembly launched the International Decade for the World’s Children for a Culture of Peace and Nonviolence. The first day of the millennium saw the advent of Global Family Day. Peace activist Linda Grover was instrumental in publicizing the day to the whole world.
In 1999, members of the United Nations received an invitation to formally celebrate the first day of the year as Global Families Day. A year later in 2001, seeing the success and influence, the day was made an annual event.
