New Mayor of Delhi- Shelly Oberoi

Shelly Oberoi became the new Mayor of Delhi after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won the mayoral election conducted by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). He defeated Rekha Gupta of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Meanwhile, AAP’s Ale Mohammad Iqbal has also been elected as the Deputy Mayor of Delhi. He defeated Kamal Bagri of BJP by a margin of 31 votes. This election was the fourth attempt to elect a mayor and deputy mayor of the new municipal corporation.

Secretary-cum-Scientific Director, Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission, Rajeev Singh Raghuvanshi has been appointed as the new Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI). The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) had selected his name for the post of DCGI last month. Raghuvanshi’s appointment will be effective from the date of his assumption of charge till he attains the age of superannuation on February 28, 2025, or until further orders (whichever is earlier).

Sania Mirza retired from tennis

Sania Mirza ended her 20-year-long tennis career at the WTA Dubai Duty-Free Championships on 21 February. The 36-year-old partnered with American Madison Keys in the women’s doubles event of the tournament. She is a six-time Grand Slam winner and one of the most successful tennis stars in the country. Post retirement, she is all set to mentor the women’s Royal Challengers Bangalore cricket team.

Karnataka Hijab Ban

A group of girl students from Karnataka approached the Supreme Court on February 22, seeking permission to appear in the examination wearing the hijab. The apex court said it would soon take “a call” on the matter. According to media reports, the pre-university examinations in Karnataka are expected to start from March 9, 2023.

HC allows KTU VC to continue

On 21 February, Governor Arif Mohammed Khan informed that the Kerala High Court has allowed APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University’s interim Vice-Chancellor Seeza Thomas to continue with his tenure and there is no need for him to approach the Supreme Court. Speaking to reporters in Delhi, the Governor said that any decision of the Kerala High Court or any court would be implemented in letter and spirit. His statement has come at a time when the state government had sent a panel of three names to him for the selection of the Vice-Chancellor of the said university.
