Dr. Raj has cycled more than 75 thousand kilometers so far. He is currently traveling to Botswana.

Sudhulika Sanghi, a woman cyclist from Gurugram, says that our country does not have infrastructure for cyclists in small towns. Traffic and crime is a big problem in big cities. There are no cycle tracks. In cities where there are cycle tracks, people throw a lot of garbage and broken glass, which leads to bicycle puncture. Cyclists are unable to do their own practice. In such a situation, one has to walk on the roads made for everyone.

Sudhulika says, “I go on cycle rides since 2017. I have never ridden alone in the country because I do not feel safe on country roads. The bikers and car riders passing by make remarks on the girls. Some people deliberately try to hit, which also results in injuries while trying to escape. In South India, only a group of girls go out on a ride, whereas in North they are unable to do so even if they want to.

Life of cyclists in the grip of speed
Unsafe vehicles, bad roads, lack of safety equipment for cyclists and lack of knowledge are the causes of death in the country. According to the report of the Transport Research Wing (TRW) of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, 3,673 cyclists died in road accidents in the year 2018 and 4,196 in the year 2019. Talking about the country’s capital Delhi, according to the Delhi Transport Department, in the year 2020, 1,197 people died in road accidents in Delhi. Of these, 89% were pedestrians, bike riders and cyclists.

Dr. Raj says that in fact in our country the cycle has been made a ride for the poor. Unless this mindset is changed, the situation will not improve. Cycle tracks were built in many cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Noida, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Agra, Ujjain, Bhopal and Jaipur. People use cycle track in Chandigarh. If there is any problem with the track, then they complain to the administration and the administration takes action on it. Except Chandigarh, cycle tracks in most cities are in a dilapidated condition. The cycle track is being used for car parking, paan-bidi kiosks and street vendors.

These countries promoted bicycles
Some countries like Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, Sweden, Italy and Japan have promoted bicycles here. People in the Netherlands are paid 25 cents per kilometer when they come to the office by bicycle. At the same time, half an hour is also given for shower in the office. Dr. Raj says that our government and private companies together can take such initiative here too.

Demand for female cyclist
Sudhulika says that we have to import the equipment needed to participate in the cycle race at the national level. Even if you buy from the bander here, they also order from outside. We don’t have many tools in Made in India. She wants from the government that every city should have a track for cyclists in the country and a safe environment for girls. Apart from this, if all the equipment to participate in the race is available in the country, then cyclists will be able to perform well in international competitions as well.

Cycle rally across the country
Today cycle rallies will be taken out across the country. Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur will launch it from Major Dhyan Chand Stadium in Delhi. The purpose of this program is to create awareness about cycling among the people so that they can include cycle in their daily routine for fitness.
