AP Dhillon’s performance at Coachella 2024 in California might have received a lot of love from his fans all around the world but one of his gestures involving breaking a guitar after finishing his act hasn’t gone down well with a section of the internet. Singer Rahul Vaidya also condemned his act and called it ‘unfortunate’.
Now in an exclusive chat with News18 Showsha, Punjabi actor-singer Gippy Grewal has reacted to the episode and said, “I’ve seen that clip. I don’t know why he broke his guitar. I assume that it was a part of his act. I don’t really know what happened onstage but sometimes what happens is that you plan for a certain thing to go a certain way but it goes all wrong. None of us want to intentionally hurt anyone or their sentiments but sometimes, we end up doing it unintentionally.”
However, he’s quick to add that he’s quite fond of the Excuses and With You singer, who he refers to as his ‘younger brother’. “I hardly listen to urban music. But his song Brown Munde has been my favourite because my son used to listen to it a lot every time it would come on television. AP and I haven’t met each other too often but whenever we’ve met, we’ve shared some lovely moments. He’s a very respectful guy. He has made him a big name for himself today,” Gippy tells us.
Besides AP, who has successfully built a global fandom, Diljit Dosanjh has achieved new heights of stardom across the world. Along with tasting success with Amar Singh Chamkila, he made history as he took the stage at Vancouver’s BC Place as part of Dil-Luminati Tour and played for 50,000 fans. Talking about how his peers and their success have been ‘motivating’ several Punjabi artists including himself, Gippy shares, “It also helps our industry grow. Our songs and films have reached such great heights globally. I feel so proud of all of us. Even foreigners listen to our songs today!”
According to Gippy, Punjabi films too have been creating ripples at a global scale and that has propelled his industry like never before. “Recently, we’ve been noticing a trend that the box office numbers of a Punjabi film in Canada is the same as it is in our state. Earlier, the overseas collections of a Punjabi film from Canada, USA, Australia and New Zealand would only be 70-80 percent of its box office figures in Punjabi. I think that over time, the Canadian box office numbers of Punjabi films will supersede Punjab,” points out Gippy, whose Carry On Jatta 3 grossed over Rs 100 crore and emerged as the second highest grossing Punjabi film worldwide last year.
