Speaking on the issue of India-China border standoff, Plotner said that there is a need for dialogue instead of armed conflict

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and German Foreign and Security Policy Advisor Jens Plattner met in Delhi on Tuesday, where they discussed a wide range of bilateral and global issues such as the Ukraine conflict, Indo-Pacific cooperation and counter-terrorism efforts. The meeting took place ahead of the visit of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz India later this month.

During the meeting, Plattner stressed Germany’s commitment to democracy, rule of law and respect for human rights and highlighted India’s important role as a “partner of values”.

Both sides acknowledged the complicated international situation caused by Russia’s war against Ukraine, which has global implications such as food shortages and energy prices.

When asked about India’s role as a mediator in resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Plotner acknowledged India’s possible involvement and said, “India’s voice is strongly heard in Moscow.” As much as we believe in the rules-based international order, we are strong supporters of the multilateral system.”

He further said that the Indian perspective is important in this matter as Moscow “values and listens to Delhi’s voice”.

However, he added that the current issue is not a lack of mediators, but Russia’s reluctance to stop the war and withdraw from its neighbor.

Russia’s invasion of a small nation violates the United Nations Charter, and if unchecked, could lead to a world ruled by the strongest instead of the rule of law.

In addition to taking stock of bilateral relations and assessing the groundwork for Scholz’s visit, Plattner’s discussions in Delhi focused on new areas of cooperation, including renewable energy, green hydrogen, and green technologies being developed by industries in both countries. as part of a collaboration to combat climate. Scholz’s visit is expected to begin on February 25. This will be Scholz’s first visit to India after taking over as German Chancellor in December 2021 after Angela Merkel’s historic 16-year tenure at the top post.

In December, German Foreign Minister Annalena Bierbock paid a two-day visit to India, apparently to prepare for Scholz’s long-awaited visit.
