Gary Kirsten likely to become next head coach of Pakistan

Gary was the head coach of the 2011 World Cup winning Indian team under the then captain MS Dhoni.

Gary Kirsten is one of three names chosen to replace Misbah-ul-Haq, who recently stepped down.

Former South African cricketer Gary Kirsten is regarded as one of the most successful coaches in international cricket. Now, he’s reportedly on Pakistan Cricket Radar of the Board (PCB) to be the next men’s team head coach. He is among the three names selected to replace Misbah-ul-Haq, who stepped down as head coach before the ICC t20 world cup. Apart from Gary, Australian coach Simon Katich and former England cricketer Peter Moores are among the candidates shortlisted for the position.

Gary was the head coach of the 2011 World Cup winning Indian team under the then captain MS Dhoni. Katich has previously coached two teams of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He was the assistant coach of Kolkata Knight Riders and the head coach of Royal Challengers Bangalore. Moores served as the head coach of the England team twice.

Gary, who briefly coached the South Africa team after the 2011 World Cup, will prove to be a great addition to the PCB, which are currently looking for a permanent overseas head coach. Ahead of the T20 World Cup, while Misbah-ul-Haq resigned as the head coach, Waqar Younis resigned as Pakistan’s bowling coach. The PCB has appointed former off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq as Pakistan’s interim coach and Abdul Razzaq is looking after the bowling department. Changes took place with Rameez Raja taking over as PCB chief.

According to a report in The Indian Express, PCB chief Raja is in favor of appointing a foreign coach on a full-time basis, while most coaches prefer to be associated with franchise cricket due to the short duration. The report said that Gary could be Pakistan’s next head coach while Katich and Moores may have to settle for the Pakistan Super League.

The resignations of Misbah and Waqar did not have any impact on the performance of the Pakistani team in the ongoing T20 World Cup in UAE. In their first match, Pakistan beat arch-rivals India by 10 wickets in Group 2 to beat New Zealand by 5 wickets in their second match of the Super 12 round. Pakistan team is on top of the Group 2 points table after winning two matches. Babar Azam-led team is on its way to make it to the semi-finals.
