Ganga river crosses danger mark in Varanasi, flood alert in low-lying areas

The water level of river Ganga in Varanasi has crossed the danger mark and is still rising. The Ganga is growing at a speed of 3 cm per hour and is being monitored continuously by the government.

In view of the speed of the rising water level of Ganga and Varuna, the administration has made a control room and deployed officers of various departments, issuing an alert to the people on the banks of the river.

Now all eyes are on the water level of Ganga, which has been monitored every hour. The operation of the boat service had already stopped and the services of Alaknanda Cruise will also remain closed till the situation becomes normal.

Talking about various ghats, Manikarnika Ghat is submerged in water, so the cremation is being done on a platform built above the road. The last rites are being performed on the road itself at Harishchandra Ghat. More than 150 houses have started submerging in water in Maruthi Nagar Colony and Gayatri Nagar in front ghat area. Ganga Aarti is now being performed on the terrace of Ganga Seva Nidhi Bhawan at Dashashwamedh Ghat.

Meanwhile, people living in areas like Konia, Nakkhi Ghat, Sindhwa Ghat, Ghisiawan etc. located on the banks of river Varuna are also surrounded by flood waters. The stairs of Assi Ghat have been submerged in water.

According to the report, the water level of Ganga has reached 71.36 meters which is 10 cms above the danger mark of 71.26 metres, the water level is still rising. Water has also entered the municipal waste disposal center Karsada. Seeing this fierce form of Ganga, people are remembering the year 2013, when the water of Varuna river entered the houses at midnight.
