New Delhi: In the heart of a small village, nestled within the annals of legend and mystique, lies a remarkable well that holds a tale as extraordinary as it is divine. This story unfolds in the sacred precincts of a temple dedicated to Lord Vinayaka (Ganesha), where mute, deaf, and blind brothers discovered not only the elixir of life but also a deity that defies explanation.
The miracle at the well
As the legend goes, these three brothers, each afflicted with a different disability, embarked on the noble task of digging a well to quench the thirst of their arid fields. Fate, however, had a different plan in store. In a moment of sheer destiny, their digging device collided with an impenetrable object within the well’s depths, causing a remarkable phenomenon. To their astonishment, the well began to overflow with blood-red water, and, as if touched by the divine, the brothers miraculously shed their disabilities.
The unveiling of Ganesha
Word of this extraordinary occurrence spread like wildfire, drawing villagers from near and far to witness the inexplicable. What they uncovered within the depths of that enigmatic well left them in awe—a sacred deity of Lord Ganesha, the harbinger of wisdom and remover of obstacles. Despite their best efforts, villagers could not fathom the depths from which this deity had emerged, as the well remained perennially filled with water, cradling the divine presence.
A temple’s rich legacy
This captivating narrative gave birth to the construction of a temple that stands today as a testament to faith and wonder. The temple’s origins date back to the early 11th century CE, founded by the illustrious Chola king, Kulothunga Chola I. Over time, it witnessed further expansion and grandeur under the patronage of the Emperors of the Vijayanagara dynasty in 1336.
A Svayambhu deity
At the heart of this temple, the presiding deity, Lord Vinayaka, is believed to be Svayambhu, self-manifested. The divine presence of Ganesha is said to reside perpetually within the well, which remains filled with water, an eternal symbol of the divine grace that transformed those brothers.
Guardians of the divine
In the present day, the temple falls under the watchful care of the Endowments Department of Andhra Pradesh, which will appoint a dedicated trust board comprising 15 members to administer its sacred affairs.
An annual celebration
Every year, the temple comes alive with a vibrant celebration known as the Annual Brahmotsavam, spanning 21 glorious days. Commencing on Vinayaka Chavithi day, these festivities witness the procession of the divine Vinayaka idol on various vahanams, drawing devotees from all corners of the nation to partake in this sacred spectacle.
