According to mythology, once Lord Ganesha was guarding the main gate of the house on the orders of Mother Parvati. Then Lord Shiva came there and tried to enter the house. Lord Ganesha refused them to go inside and prevented them from entering the house. Then Mahadev in anger cut off the head of Lord Ganesha from his torso.

Meanwhile, Goddess Mata Parvati ji came there. He apprised Lord Shiva of the calamity caused by him. He told her that it was his son Ganesha. He asked her to bring Ganesha back to life. Then Lord Shiva gave a new life to Ganesha by giving Gajanan face. All the gods were blessing Gajanan, but the moon god was smiling on seeing him. Ganesha did not like to be ridiculed by Chandra Dev. So in anger, he cursed Chandra Dev to be black forever. Due to the effect of the curse, the beauty of Chandra Dev was destroyed and he became black. Then Chandra Dev realized his mistake and apologized to Ganesha. Ganapati said that the moon god will now be able to fully manifest only once in a month. This is the reason why the moon appears in its full glory on the full moon day.
