Gandhi family solely responsible for Congress’s defeat in Punjab: Amarinder

Amarinder Singh on Monday blamed the Gandhi family solely for the Congress’s defeat in the assembly polls and claimed that the party was kept at ease in Punjab before he stepped down as chief minister. In a statement a day after the Congress Working Committee (CWC) took stock of the party’s defeat in five states, Singh took a dig at state Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu and the corrupt Charanjit Singh Channi, who replaced him as CM. . ,

After stepping down as CM last year, Amarinder Singh quit the Congress and formed his own Punjab Lok Congress. He slammed the CWC for trying to put the blame for the Congress defeat in Punjab on him, instead of graciously admitting his own mistakes.

He said that the Congress has lost not only in Punjab but also in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur and the Gandhi family is solely responsible for the party’s humiliating defeat. Referring to Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, he said that people across the country have lost faith in the leadership of the Gandhi family.

On Monday, former Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar also questioned Channi’s appointment as Punjab CM ahead of the elections, mocking a senior party leader for allegedly describing him as an asset. In the recently concluded assembly elections, the Congress got just 18 seats, and the Aam Aadmi Party entered the house of 117 with 92.

Amarinder Singh claimed that several senior leaders within the party were blaming Navjot Sidhu’s anti-party statements for infighting in Punjab Congress and poor performance in the state. He said in a statement here that the day the party decided to support an unstable and arrogant person like Navjot Sidhu and nominate a corrupt person like Charanjit Singh Channi as Chief Minister a few months before the elections, the party started its campaign in the border state. The grave was dug up, he said in a statement here. ,

Singh said the CWC leaders who were claiming that there was a strong anti-incumbency wave against his government had conveniently forgotten that he had won every election for the party since 2017, including those for municipal bodies in February 2021. Elections were also included. , He said that these leaders are just sycophants, who are trying to save the family by blaming the words written on the wall and closing their eyes.

He claimed that the Congress has no future in the present system. Singh said the real reason for the defeat in Punjab was the party high command first taking sides and then failing to rein in people like Navjot Sidhu, who maligned the party’s image for their personal gains.

In their attempts to defame me, the party high command joined hands with Navjot and others, and in the process completely defamed the party. Singh said that though he had not given any explanation to the CWC or the Congress, he had chosen to react to the comments of these leaders to explain his position to the people of Punjab, to whom he still felt accountable.

Amarinder Singh was asked to resign from the CM post last September after a bitter feud between him and Navjot Sidhu. In the 2022 elections, Singh’s new party failed to win a single seat.
