Galvan Valley conflict: External Affairs Ministry rejects China’s claim that ‘India violated bilateral agreements’

India on Friday rejected China’s claim that New Delhi has violated all bilateral agreements regarding borders and encroached upon Chinese territory. Responding to this, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said that it was “provocative behavior and unilateral efforts” of the Chinese side to change the status quo in violation of all bilateral agreements, resulting in serious disturbance of peace and tranquility. Hui.

In a press briefing, Bagchi said, “We reject such statements. Our position with respect to development along the LAC in Eastern Ladakh last year has been clear and consistent. It is in violation of all our bilateral agreements to change the status quo. There were provocative behavior and unilateral efforts on the part of Chinese side, which resulted in serious disturbance of peace and tranquility. This has also affected bilateral relations.”

“As EAM emphasized in his meeting with the Chinese Foreign Minister earlier this month, it is our expectation that the Chinese side will work towards an early resolution of the remaining issues along the LAC in eastern Ladakh, while fully will adhere to bilateral agreements and protocols. ,” she added.

The reaction came after Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said, “All agreements and treaties between China and India on maintaining peace and stability in the region of the LAC have played an important role in maintaining stability in the border areas.”

“Last year, the Galwan Valley incident happened because India violated all signed agreements and treaties and encroached upon Chinese territory, illegally crossing the Line of Control (LAC). We hope that India will abide by all the signed agreements and maintain peace and stability in the border region with concrete action,” Hindustan Times quoted Zhao Lijian as saying.

The Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh was the site of a violent clash between Indian and Chinese armies on June 15 last year, in which 20 Indian soldiers were killed. India has already rejected China’s claim of sovereignty over the Galvan Valley.

Amid strained relations between India and China after the deadly skirmish in Galwan Valley, the two sides completed the withdrawal of troops and arms from the north and south banks of Pangong Lake in February this year after a series of military and diplomatic talks. . Months later, China officially announced that it had suffered four casualties, although observers believe the number may have been much higher. This was the first deadly clash between Indian and Chinese troops on the LAC in the last 45 years.

Both sides are now engaged in talks to extend the process of separation to the remaining friction points.

The talks remain at a standstill as the Chinese military did not show flexibility in its approach on withdrawing troops in the remaining friction in the 11th round of military talks with the Indian Army on April 9.
