Gadkari: Govt intends to make 30% EV sales penetration for private cars by 2030: Gadkari – Times of India

New Delhi: The government intends to reach 30 per cent of EV sales for private cars, 70 per cent for commercial vehicles and 80 per cent for two and three-wheelers by 2030, as there is an urgent need to decarbonize the transport sector, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Friday.
Gadkari further said that if electric vehicles reach 40 per cent in two-wheelers and cars segment by 2030 and close to 100 per cent for buses, India will be able to reduce crude oil consumption by Rs 3.5 lakh crore by 156 million tonnes .
“There is an urgent need to decarbonize the transport sector and make it sustainable from the point of view of economy, ecology and environment,” he said while addressing a virtual event organized by industry body FICCI.
“The government intends to reach 30 per cent of EV sales for private cars, 70 per cent for commercial vehicles, 40 per cent for buses and 80 per cent for two and three-wheelers by 2030,” he said.
The Minister of Road Transport and Highways said that in the EV Mission, NITI Aayog Inspired 25 states to come up with EV policies, out of which 15 have already announced state EV policy.
He said a possible pilot project is being planned to set up an electric highway between Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, which will facilitate movement of heavy duty trucks and passenger buses on electricity.
Considering that transport plays an important role in the overall development of a country, Gadkari Globally, India has the longest rail-line length and the second largest road network carrying millions of passengers and tons of freight every day. To meet the everyday transport needs of a large population, he said that his ministry is focusing on development of efficient and affordable public transport systems such as metro rail, Rapid Rail Transit, Mono-Rail, BRT, Intra and Intercity Bus Services.
