One of the favorite festivals depicting romance in Bollywood films is Karwa Chauth. This occasion is used by many filmmakers as a narrative device to connect the audience with love and attraction, song and dance. According to Hindu belief, wives keep fast on this day until they see the moon in the evening. And now that this Karwa Chauth is just round the corner, we list down the most remarkable Karwa Chauth scenes from Bollywood films over the years.
Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995)
Even after 26 years of its release, Shahrukh Khan-Kajol‘s romantic drama still rules everyone’s hearts. In his attempt to win the hearts of Simran’s family, Raj wins the hearts of the entire nation. Every scene in this movie is a classic but the Karva Chauth scene is the icing on the cake. Simran observes a fast and pretends to fall ill in front of everyone so that Raj can come and feed her without anyone seeing her. This genuine concern of Raj and the smartness of Simran did make this scene a memorable one.
Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999)
This love triangle (Salman Khan, Aishwarya and Ajay Devgn) gave us the most memorable Karwa Chauth song, Chand Chupa Badal Mein, in which the lead pair Salman and Aishwarya celebrated their special moment. However, Sanjay Leela Bhansali had both aspects in the song and highlighted the fact that there’s a difference between fasting for your loved one and fasting for the sake of a ritual.
Biwi No.1 (1999)
Biwi’s No. 1 Karwa Chauth scene is the turning point in the film. It’s memorable because of its importance in the plot in exposing Salman’s character, who is cheating on his wife played by Karisma Kapoor along with Sushmita Sen‘s character. The final revelation happens because of his pet dog and with this twist, the film takes a dramatic turn.
The Karwa Chauth sequence between Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini is so beautiful that it will always be remembered. In the movie, both of them are fasting for each other, the moment where Bachchan pretends to eat food and Hema catches his lie is bittersweet. The scene ends with a beautiful song of longing, Main Yahan Tu Wahan.
Thank You (2011)
Directed by Anees Bazmee, Thank You’s Kawa Chauth scene stands out from the other films on this list because of its style. This is a moment of comic genius in which the late great actor Irrfan Khan shows off his comic timing. That scene is followed by an entertaining chase of the leading men, making it a sure short one on our list.
A special mention to Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham for giving us another Karwa Chauth gem scene. Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol once again as Rahul and Anjali not only have the best relationship but the song Bole Chudiyan Bole Kangana also featuring Kareena Kapoor Khan and Hrithik Roshan has the most beautiful Karwa Chauth segment. The film left no stone unturned to make the audience follow Karwa Chauth in their lives too.
