From Bihar to Telangana, Know How States Are Getting Their Students Out of Violence-Hit Manipur

The states of the country have been making continuous efforts to evacuate the students stranded in violence-hit Manipur for the last few days. Violent clashes broke out between tribals and people from the majority Meitei community in Manipur on Wednesday, displacing thousands. The clashes broke out after a ‘tribal solidarity march’ was organized in ten hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Monday said 60 people were killed, 231 injured and 1,700 houses, including religious places, were gutted in ethnic violence in the northeastern state in the last few days. Here’s a look at the efforts of several states to evacuate students from Manipur and bring them back to their home states:

Bihar and Jharkhand

Over 100 students from Bihar were on Tuesday brought back from Manipur, which has been in the grip of violence for some time now. According to an official, a special flight commissioned by the Nitish Kumar government had 142 students from Bihar besides 21 students from neighboring Jharkhand. The students from Jharkhand would be taken to their home state by bus and the plane landed at the Patna airport around noon. There was a sense of relief among the boys and girls who had gone to the strife-torn northeastern states to pursue higher education. However, they were unanimous that no students from outside Manipur were targeted during the violence.

Meghalaya

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday said that over 300 students from the state, who were stranded in violence-hit Manipur, have been brought back in the last few days. Sangma also said that his government had arranged a special flight on the Imphal-Shillong route on Monday to evacuate students stranded in the crisis-hit state. He said that the last batch of stranded students came directly from Imphal on Monday as a special flight was arranged for them.

Rajasthan Rajasthan

Officials said two special flights arranged by the Rajasthan government on Monday evening brought back 51 students from the state who were stranded in violence-hit Manipur. The state government has also made arrangements for the lodging and boarding facilities of these students. On Sunday, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot had said that his government would bear the travel cost of Rajasthan students returning home from the northeastern state, as he directed officials to ensure their safe return.

Maharashtra

A special flight carrying 25 students from Maharashtra stranded in violence-hit Manipur reached Mumbai on Monday evening. An official statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said that the flight was organized by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The students were shifted from Manipur to Guwahati from where they boarded a flight to Mumbai.

Madhya Pradesh

A total of 24 students from Madhya Pradesh will be brought from violence-hit Manipur to Delhi via Guwahati on Tuesday and will later be taken to four cities of their home state, a senior official said. Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Rajesh Rajora said that all these students will be taken to Indore, Bhopal, Jabalpur and Gwalior by flight and the state government will bear the expenses. Earlier, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan spoke to the students and assured them of help. Chouhan said that the state government is making all arrangements to bring back the students from Manipur to the state.

Haryana

The Haryana government on Monday said it has made arrangements for the evacuation of 16 students from the state who were stranded in violence-hit Manipur. An official statement said that following the instructions of Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, the authorities have initiated efforts to bring the students back to Haryana at the earliest. The statement quoted the Chief Secretary of Manipur as saying that all the students of Haryana are safe. The government said that as per the information received so far, five students from Haryana are pursuing education in NIT-Manipur, eight in IIIT-Manipur and three in NSU-Manipur, it is considering to take these students to Delhi via Kolkata. Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu spent Rs 60,000 from his own pocket to evacuate five local students stranded in violence-hit Manipur, an official spokesman of the government said on Monday. The spokesperson said that the Chief Minister immediately responded to the SMS of a stranded student and brought money to bring the students back home. He also directed the state government officials to take necessary action to bring back the five students. Three of them were studying at NIT Manipur, while the other two were studying at Khumban Lampak Sports Complex, National Sports University in Imphal.

Sikkim

One hundred and twenty-eight students from Sikkim returned home from violence-hit Manipur on Monday, officials said. He said that the students stranded in Manipur were brought home by the state government under ‘Operation Gura’. The students from Sikkim were first airlifted to Kolkata on Sunday, from where they were brought to Siliguri by buses late in the evening. They spent a night in the state government-arranged facilities in the north Bengal city before boarding SNT buses for the Himalayan state this morning. The students from Sikkim reached the border town of Rango in the afternoon and were taken to their destinations in vehicles arranged by the state government.

West Bengal

Eighteen students from West Bengal, who were stranded in Manipur, were brought back to Kolkata on Monday morning, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said. He said that these students were pursuing B.Sc, M.Sc and Ph.D courses at the Central Agricultural University in Imphal. Banerjee said the rescue operation was launched after an emergency call was received at the control room set up at the state secretariat Nabanna. He said the students were brought back by a special flight organized by the state government and it landed at 10.15 am. The travel expenses were borne by the state government, Banerjee said.

Delhi

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday said he spoke to his Manipur counterpart N Biren Singh regarding the evacuation of four students from the national capital who are stranded in the violence-hit state. Kejriwal said Singh assured him that all necessary help would be provided to the students. Addressing a press conference, Kejriwal said that four students from Delhi are in Manipur and will be evacuated on Tuesday.

Andhra Pradesh

The Andhra Pradesh government has arranged two special flights on Monday to bring back 157 students from the state stranded in trouble-torn Manipur. The flights landed in Hyderabad and Kolkata, while the government made arrangements to bring them back home from there. According to the government, 160 students from Andhra Pradesh are pursuing their education in various institutions like NITs, IIITs and Central Agricultural University in the northeastern state. A press note shared by the state government on Monday said that the control room set up at AP Bhavan in Delhi was able to track the whereabouts of these students, which helped the authorities streamline the evacuation efforts. In addition, a team of officials from AP Bhavan has been deputed to Kolkata to receive the students and assist them in taking the connecting flight to Hyderabad. From the Hyderabad airport in Telangana, APSRTC buses will pick up the evacuees and take them back to their hometowns across the state.

Mizoram

A total of 596 people have fled to Mizoram from violence-hit Manipur and sought shelter in the state, officials said on Sunday. He said that at least 45 students from Mizoram, who were stranded following ethnic clashes in neighboring Manipur since Wednesday, returned safely to their state during the day. As of Sunday evening, at least 151 people belonging to the Chin-Kuki-Mizo community in Manipur have entered Aizawl district, while 228 have fled to Kolasib near the Assam border and 217 others to Saitual bordering Manipur, Home Commissioner and Secretary H Lalengmawia he said.

Tripura

A total of 208 Tripura students studying in violence-hit Manipur have returned safely to their home state, a senior official said on Sunday. He said that twenty one more students are still waiting at Imphal airport to catch the flight to Agartala. Chief Minister Manik Saha has expressed happiness over the safe return of the students. An official in the Chief Minister’s Office said that 171 students studying at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences in Manipur’s Imphal have returned directly from there by a special flight in the early hours of Sunday and another batch of 37 students have also been brought back. ,

Sikkim

A total of 128 students from Sikkim were rescued from violence-hit Manipur and are being brought back to the state on Sunday, officials said. The stranded students were earlier brought to Kolkata on flights arranged by the state government from Imphal. From Kolkata, they boarded buses for Siliguri in northern West Bengal. From Siliguri, they were brought to the state capital Gangtok by SNT buses. Officials said a doctor from Sikkim, who was posted in a remote area in Manipur, was also brought back safely. Chief Secretary VB Pathak led ‘Operation Gurans’ to bring back the students. Officials said that Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang is constantly monitoring the situation and taking stock of the safety of the students.

Telangana

In view of the prevailing law and order situation in Manipur, the Telangana government on Sunday decided to immediately evacuate its students and citizens from Imphal to Hyderabad by a special flight. A press release from the Telangana government said that it is taking all measures to ensure the safety of its students and people living in the northeastern state. As per available information, around 250 students from Telangana are studying in various educational institutions in Imphal and surrounding areas. A special cell has been opened to monitor the situation in Manipur to protect the interests of the people of Telangana in the state, the release said.

Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh Home Minister Bamang Felix on Friday said the government is making all efforts to ensure the safe return of students from the state who are stranded in violence-hit Manipur. He said the Pema Khandu government is in “constant touch” with the Manipur administration to evacuate the students stranded in the crisis-hit state. The state government has constituted a coordination committee consisting of the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police for monitoring. The situation in Manipur, he said. The Home Minister said that a control room has been set up in the Civil Secretariat. 263 students from Arunachal Pradesh are studying in various institutions in Manipur.
