Croatia’s Marin Cilic has qualified for the semi-finals of the French Open 2022 after beating Russia’s Andrey Rublev in a thrilling five-setter at Filipp-Chatier on Wednesday, June 1.

Being the higher ranked player of the two, Rublev started the match by winning the first set. But Cilic made a spectacular comeback to win the second and third sets. Rublev somehow got a foothold in the match by winning the fourth set.

In the fifth and final set, both Cilic and Rubal threw punches at each other and it went into a tie-breaker. From there, Rublev seems to have lost a lot of steam and Cilic kept churning out one point after another.

Cilic was excellent when it came to smashing winners as he pulled off 88 of them compared to his opponent’s 35. Cilic also churned out 33 aces to keep Rublev at bay and on his toes.

Cilic will face the winner of Casper Roode and Holger Rune in the semi-finals. In the second semi-final, Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal, who is also the winner of 13 French Open titles, and world number three Alexander Zverev will take on each other.

In women’s singles, world number one Inga Swietake and Daria Kaskatina will take on each other in the semi-finals. America’s Coco Gough and Martina Trevison will face off in the second semi-final.

Gauff will make her first Grand Slam semi-final appearance after defeating Sloane Stephens of the USA in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
