French Open: I believed in myself the whole time – Carlos Alcaraz after thrilling second round win

The 19-year-old Carlos Alcaraz made a stunning comeback to seal a thrilling second-round victory over fellow Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas in a five-set marathon at the French Open.

Alcaraz, who was down 0-3, displayed his title credentials as he narrowly escaped a match point in the fourth set and went 6-1, 6-7 (9), 5-7, 7 (9) in his favor. 7) – 6, 6-4 in a match that lasted four and a half hours.

“I am still young but now I am an experienced player,” Alcaraz said after the match.

“I feel comfortable playing in big stadiums, big matches, Grand Slams. I am ready to play these kind of matches in these conditions.

“I want to play big battles and top fights against the best players in the world,” he said. “It’s my dream to be number one because I’ve talked about playing tennis.”

After winning back-to-back titles at Barcelona and Madrid ahead of the French Open, Alcaraz now has a 12-match winning streak. He will now take on American Sebastian Korda, who defeated France’s Richard Gasquet 7(7)-6, 6-3, 6-3.

The Spaniard was on the verge of an early exit, but he escaped match point 5-4 and forced the fifth set. Alkaraz, however, once again had to draw 0-3 before finishing the match.

“I knew I would have a chance at the end of the fourth set. I believed in myself the whole time. In the fourth and fifth sets, I was smiling with my team,” he said.
