French Open 2022 Final: Rafael Nadal beats Casper Roode to win record 14th Roland Garros title

Rafael Nadal won a record 14th French Open men’s singles title by defeating Casper Roode in three straight sets in Paris on Sunday. Nadal won 6-3, 6-3, 6-0 in a dominant fashion and 23-year-old Roode struggled to find answers against the seasoned campaigner.

It was also Nadal’s record-expanding 22nd Grand Slam title – the most by any male player in the history of men’s singles. He has now surpassed two of his famous rivals – Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer (each with 20 Grand Slam titles).

Federer hasn’t played in nearly a year after a series of knee operations, and Djokovic missed the Australian Open in January because he was not vaccinated against Covid19 and then lost to Nadal in the quarterfinals at Roland Garros .

At the age of 36, the Spaniard thus overtook Andres Gimeno to become the oldest player to win the French Open men’s singles title. It is also the first time in his professional career that Nadal has completed a double century, winning the Australian Open and the French Open in the same year.

This was the first meeting between Nadal and Roode at an international event. However, Rudd is somewhat familiar with the legend, who has been training at Nadal’s academy since September 2018.

Fifth seed Nadal was battling a leg injury and playing in pain during the tournament. He has Muller-Weiss syndrome which has cast doubt on his playing career as well.

However, his love affair with Philip Charter Court continues with another title.

Rudd took a 3–1 lead in the second set, a deficit that prompted Nadal to raise his level – he played the last 11 games. The Spaniard’s first victory in Paris came in 2005 at the age of 19. No man or woman has won a singles trophy in any of the major events in Paris in more than 14 years. And no person has won more Grand Slam titles than Nadal.
