Bengaluru: KodaguOn Thursday, Bengaluru became the fourth district in Karnataka to deliver the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine to the entire target population, achieving 100% after Gadag (127%), Gadag (102%) and Vijayapura (101%). ,
Dr S Gopinath, Reproductive and Child Health Officer, Kodagu, said, “We have touched 100%, although official data shows that 1,834 people are yet to receive their first dose.” “There are over 1,300 duplicate entries and this has been brought to the notice of the health department. There are more than 500 people who have either died or are not getting the vaccine because of health issues. Some may have even left Kodagu.”
Dr. R. VenkateshThe Kodagu District Health Officer (DHO) said the achievement was made possible because the district conducted a special vaccination drive twice a week, though the government had made it mandatory only once a week. “We held meetings after the fairs on Wednesday and Friday to take a microplan and take stock,” he said.
Four other districts are on the verge of completing 100% first dose coverage. Data from the Department of Health and Family Welfare shows that Bagalkot has secured 99% and Belagavi, Chikkaballapura and Davangere 98%. Health and Education Minister in a tweet K Sudhakari Congratulations to all the health workers and district administration on this remarkable achievement.
The overall first dose coverage in the state is 96%, with around 4.7 crore of the 4.9 crore people eligible to receive the vaccine after having received at least one shot. Bengaluru (BBMP) has covered 91% of its eligible population with the first dose.
Health officials said streamlining the supply of vaccines and initiatives like ‘Har Ghar Dastak’ (knock on every door) have made a huge difference.
Dr Arundhati Chandrasekhar, Mission Director, National Health Mission, Karnataka said, “Microplanning at the district level, increased last mile coverage and efforts to take vaccines to the doorsteps helped in achieving this milestone.” She is also in charge of COVID-19 vaccination.
Bengaluru Urban’s target was to vaccinate 10.3 lakh people, but over 1.3 million people took the first dose. The credit for this is the special interest shown by Bengaluru Urban Deputy Commissioner J Manjunath and the efforts of the health workers to reach out to the migrant population, especially in North Karnataka and Tamil Nadu,
But Gadag DHO Dr Satish C Basrigida acknowledged that it would be difficult to simulate 100% achievement with the second dose. “Many workers who took the first dose in Gadag have moved to other districts and states, especially Goa, Maharashtra, Mangaluru and Bengaluru,” he said. “We are calling them to check if they have taken the second dose. Some people say that one dose is enough for them.” The coverage of the second dose of Gadag is 66%.
Districts struggling to score 100% say the challenge lies in covering rural people. “Many local people in rural areas have not taken the first dose and we are trying to vaccinate all of them through the Gram Panchayat Task Force,” Dr. Shashikanth Muniyal, DHO, Belagavi.
