Formula 2: Jehan Daruwalla dominates sprint race for season’s first win

Carlin’s Jehan Daruvala claimed his first win of the season with a controlled performance in the second sprint race at Monza, ahead of Trident rookie Bent Wiskal and Prema Racing’s Robert Schwartzman, who took his fourth podium of the year.

Given the chaos of the opener, the second sprint race was surprisingly peaceful, with Daruvala crossing the line 6.1 in front of Viskal, who made the Formula 2 podium for the first time.

Reverse polesitter David Beckman entered the race late and Schwartzman entered the top three late after falling from second to fifth behind Liam Lawson.

Championship rivals Oscar Piastri and Guanyue Zhou finished one after the other in seventh and eighth, while Juri Wipps of the Hi-Tech Grand Prix was ahead of them in sixth.

Line up from pole for the second race in succession, Beckmann made an almost identical start, but this time Daruvala’s Carlin jumped on him, down the line and from inside to take first in Turn 1.

After a great escape, Viskal was up one place to third, ahead of Vips, but sprint race 1 hero Christian Lundgaard was thrown around the back of the field.

There was a sense of déj vu in the fight for the seventh, as 2020 Formula 3 title rivals Theo Porchare and Piastri began feuding. The French had already passed Zhou and was trying to overtake Piastri as well, finally making the trick stick after several corners of toe and froing.

A virtual safety car meant that Piastri was unable to respond, as HWA RACELAB teammates Jake Hughes and Alessio Deleda collided, leaving the Briton’s car stuck in the wall. Guilherme Samaya had his Charouz Racing System stopped at the entrance to the pit.

After losing fifth to Lawson, Schwartzman not only snatched P5 to reclaim P5 but also snatched fourth from Vips, who then fell one place behind his hi-tech teammate.

Piastri set the fastest lap on his way to finish seventh from Porchior, with ART ever-slightly wide and falling into Zhou’s clutches, but the Virtuosi racer chose against an early move and kept his patience. decided to keep.

Piastri was allowed to exit the road as Porchior turned his attention to defending P8, but the winner of Sprint Race 1 missed Chicane and had to pass through the escape road to return to ninth place out of points.

Daruwalla looked in front with no trouble, but Beckmann and Wiskel were still battling for P2 six seconds earlier. Campos stopped at Turn 1 and had to take Escape Road. Returning to third, he attempted to take second again, but it appeared to have rejoined the track unsafely, duly noted by the stewards.

Wiskall dismissed the challenge and went into the distance, as Schwartzman, and then Lawson, both jumped off Beckman and dropped to fifth ahead of the checkered flag. The Vips held in front of Piastri and Zhou in sixth place.

“I think a win this season was long overdue, so I’m very happy. It’s been a good weekend so far, I’ve been consistently fast. I think we deserved the win, hopefully I I can repeat it tomorrow.
