Beckman was within DRS range for the first few laps, but Jahan kept his cool and slowly walked away, opening a gap of a second. Once Beckman was out of the DRS range, Jahan continued to increase his lead every lap.
Three laps before the finish, Jahan had already opened a gap of five seconds comfortably. Beckmann fell to third under pressure, while Dutchman, Bent Wiskall, dropped to second. Soon the former F3 champion, Russia’s Robert Schwartzmann also overtook the German.
Jahn’s dominance meant he won the race by more than six seconds ahead of Wiskel and Schwartzman. It was Jahan’s third podium of the season and his second Formula 2 victory after the Sakhir Grand Prix weekend in the previous season.
“It feels really special to hear the Indian national anthem on the top stage of the podium. Winning at Monza is every racer’s dream. I had qualified well and knew I had the winning momentum.
“Getting ahead of David at the start and then breaking the tow were key moments in the race. A big thank you to Carlin for the great car. I look forward to the feature race tomorrow,” said an excited Jahn.
Jahan’s stellar performance in qualifying saw him qualify for second place just 0.04 seconds away from pole. He will start the feature race in second place tomorrow, where all racers must complete a mandatory pit stop.
