Formula 1 announces night races on the streets of Las Vegas from 2023

Formula 1 has announced that the season from 2023 will have one night race.

After more than 40 years, the sport is making its way back to one of the most popular cities in the United States. The last time F1 came to Vegas was back in 1981 and 1982 with the circuit in the car park of Caesars Palace Casino.

This time, the return to Vegas is huge, with a track length of 6.12km with 50 laps, making it one of the longest tracks in the calendar.

The race will take place on Saturday as opposed to Sunday at other venues. Practice and qualifying will take place the day before, on Thursday and Friday respectively.

Drivers will pass through famous Las Vegas hotels such as Venice, Caesars Palace and Bellagio.

The race will take place sometime in November, with exact dates yet to be confirmed. To give an extraordinary presentation to the fans, the streets will be illuminated at night.

It will also be the third race in the United States with Austin, Texas, and the 2022 Miami Grand Prix at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.

F1’s Liberty Media, along with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, and Live Nation Entertainment will help promote the event.

After 2 km there will be an opportunity for the drivers to overtake, finally with a hard left hand for the drivers, with two other straights as a part of the track.

Although it is a street circuit, the roads will be 12-15 meters wide, allowing cars to remain adjacent to each other.

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali said: “This is an incredible moment for Formula 1 with the third race in the US showing the enormous appeal and growth of our sport.”

“Las Vegas is a destination known around the world for its excitement, hospitality, adventure and of course the famous Strip.”

“There is no better place to race for Formula 1 than the global entertainment capital of the world and we can’t wait to be here next year.”

“I want to thank everyone who helped complete this program, especially Governor Sisolak, the Clark County Commission, Steve Hill at LVCVA, and our local partners.”

LVCVA President and CEO Steve Hill said: “We look forward to the moment when the history, energy and momentum of Formula 1 will culminate in an unforgettable Saturday night on the Las Vegas Strip.”

“Spectators will experience the unmatched thrill of watching these world-class drivers race what is sure to become one of the most iconic racetracks in the world.”

“Formula 1 and Liberty Media have been incredible partners, and we look forward to November 2023 when we show once again that Las Vegas is the ‘Greatest Arena on Earth’.”

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc sits at the top of the Formula 1 table with 45 points after two races, followed by teammates Carlos Sainz on 33 and Max Verstappen (Red Bull) on 25 points.

The next Grand Prix will take place on Sunday 10 April at the Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit.
