Former President Pranab Mukherjee’s son Abhijit Mukherjee joins TMC in Kolkata

Congress MP Abhijit Mukherjee, son of former President Pranab Mukherjee, on Monday joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in Kolkata. He was inducted into the party at a press conference in the presence of senior Trinamool Congress leaders.

He said, “Pradesh (state) Congress was not using me in any way. I was being sidelined for every political program. I thought it appropriate to join Trinamool as Mamata Banerjee is clearly the most trusted opponent against BJP. Face has emerged.” .

Abhijit Mukherjee, a two-time MP in the Lok Sabha from his father’s seat Jangipur, has been in talks with the TMC leadership for the past few weeks.

When asked about his sister Sharmishtha, who is with the Congress, Abhijeet said, “Sharmishtha is an independent and individual entity…she is capable and entitled to her decisions.”

Abhijit Mukherjee’s transition to TMC is being seen as a major embarrassment for the Congress, which has lost some of its prominent faces in recent years including Jyotiraditya Scindia, Jitin Prasada, Himanta Biswa Sarma, etc.

A few days ago, during the fake vaccination controversy in Kolkata, the Congress MP was also seen speaking in favor of Mamata Banerjee.

In a tweet, he said, “If Didi Mamta Banerjee is to be personally blamed by an IAS officer Debanjan Deb for fake vaccination camp, then surely Modi ji is to be blamed for all scams by Nirav Modi, Vijay Mallya, Mehul Choksi etc. So there is no point in blaming the West Bengal government for the individual act.”
