Former minister Karan Singh’s son Vikramaditya Singh quits Congress, says party ‘disconnected’ from the realities of Jammu and Kashmir

Congress leader and grandson of the then Maharaja Hari Singh of Jammu and Kashmir Vikramaditya Singh on Tuesday announced his resignation from the oldest party and said his views on important issues related to Jammu and Kashmir do not coincide with the party’s. Vikramaditya, who is the elder son of veteran Congress leader and former Union minister Karan Singh, has also accused the party of “connecting with the ground realities”.

Taking to Twitter, he said, “I tender my resignation from the Indian National Congress. My position on important issues of J&K which reflect national interest is not aligned with the Congress party. @INCIndia is connected to the ground reality.”

“I believe that the Congress is unable to realize and reflect the feelings and aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said in a letter to Congress President Sonia Gandhi.

Vikramaditya also said that after joining the Congress, he had expressed his views in support of the Balakot air strike, abrogation of Article 370-35A, among many other issues. “After joining the Congress, I expressed my views in support of many issues, which do not match with the stand of the Congress. These include Balakot air strikes, abrogation of Article 370-35A, formation of the Union Territory of Ladakh, condemnation of the Gupkar alliance and support for the delimitation process.

Speaking on G-23 leaders, he said, “G-23 has many skilled Congress leaders and ignoring them is a big mistake. If you don’t change with the times, don’t keep in mind the aspirations of the people and the youth, you will fade away. If any group has emerged to suggest to the high command, the party should cooperate.”

He also spoke on the film ‘The Kashmir Files’ and said that it is sad to see that the Congress is still “not accepting the consequences of the Kashmiri genocide”. “I haven’t seen the movie ‘The Kashmir Files’… but I was in Srinagar till 1989… It’s sad that the Congress is still in denial and not accepting the consequences of the Kashmiri genocide.” The film, directed by Vivek Agnihotri and starring Anupam Kher, has sparked a debate over the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from the Kashmir Valley.

Vikramaditya had joined the PDP in August 2015 and was a member of the State Legislative Council. He resigned from the party in October 2017, saying that it was not possible for him to continue with the PDP, which “disregarded the demands and aspirations of the Jammu region”.

He then joined the Congress and contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from the Udhampur constituency of Jammu and Kashmir from the Congress.
