Former leaders announce Afghanistan government in exile, to be headed by Amrullah Saleh

According to a statement issued by the Afghan Embassy in Switzerland, the judicial, executive and legislative branches of the government-in-exile will soon become “active”. “Following the escape of Ashraf Ghani and his break from Afghan politics, his first Vice President (Amrullah Saleh) will lead the country,” the statement said.

The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan is the only legitimate government in Afghanistan that has been elected by the vote of the people, and no other government can replace the legitimate government, the statement said.

It also announced support for the Panjshir Resistance, the anti-Taliban front led by Ahmed Masood, adding that the republic’s embassies and consulates would continue to function prior to the Taliban takeover.

The statement attributed the leaders of the deposed government and other political leaders, but the names were not made public.

The Taliban captured almost all major towns and cities in Afghanistan last month in the backdrop of a US military withdrawal that began on May 1. The capital Kabul fell to the rebels on 15 August.

The Taliban claimed victory over opposition forces in the last holdout province of Panjshir on 6 September, completing their occupation of Afghanistan three weeks after the capture of Kabul.
