Former Gujarat governor OP Kohli passes away at 87; PM pays tribute to late BJP leader

OP Kohli passed away: Former Governor of Gujarat and veteran BJP leader from Delhi OP Kohli passed away on Monday. According to a statement issued by the Delhi BJP, Kohli, a former president of the party’s Delhi unit, was unwell for the last two to three months and passed away at a hospital in Noida. He was 87 years old. The saffron party said that his last rites would be performed at Nigambodh Ghat on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the death of Kohli and said he played a key role in strengthening the party in the national capital. Modi tweeted, “Saddened by the demise of Shri OP Kohli ji. He played a key role in strengthening our party in Delhi. As MP and Governor, he focused on issues of public welfare. Also in the field of education. He was deeply concerned. My thoughts are with the family. Om Shanti,” he tweeted.

Who was OP Kohli?

Delhi BJP working president Virendra Sachdeva, in particular, said Kohli was a dedicated worker of the party, under whose guidance thousands of leaders and workers were groomed over the years. Sachdeva said Kohli started his political career as a volunteer of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and held various positions with the ABVP, Delhi University Students Union and Delhi University Teachers Association.

In January 1991, Kohli entered the political arena and took over as the President of the Delhi BJP. He held the position thrice and represented Delhi in the Rajya Sabha. As a member of the National Executive of the BJP, he held the organizational charge of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana. Kholi served as the governor of Gujarat from 2014 to 2019, the Delhi BJP said in a statement.
