Former fast bowler Darren Gough appointed Managing Director of Cricket at Yorkshire

Yorkshire County Cricket The Club (YCCC) on Monday announced the appointment of former England fast bowler Darren Gough as the Managing Director of Cricket at the club on an interim basis. Gough’s appointment, as of now, will initially last until the conclusion of the 2022 season.

Gough, who was seen as the front-runner for the position, will resume his job at the club on Monday and has left his job as a host and chief cricket commentator with talkSPORT.

In 58 Tests for England, Gough took 229 wickets at an average of 28.39.

“Yorkshire County Cricket Club has been a part of my life since my early days in cricket, when I made my debut in 1989, and I spent 15 happy years at the club. Like many, I have followed how the club handled recent racism allegations with sadness and anger.

“I look forward to playing my part in rebuilding cricket in Yorkshire and I look forward to working with an exceptionally talented group of players here,” Gough said in a statement.

His appointment is seen as a major step for Yorkshire to come out of the racism scandal sparked by Azeem Rafiq’s allegations, which resulted in sponsors breaking ties and 16 of the coaching staff, including the previous director of cricket, Martin Moxon. The member, and head coach Andrew Gayle, left the club last Friday.

Gough’s first assignment would be to oversee the recruitment of a new coaching staff in Yorkshire.

“I am also aware of my greater responsibility to listen to everyone and ensure that everyone who joins this club feels welcome, instilling the values that we want to associate with White Rose: Honesty, straight talk, hard work, integrity and excellence. I share Lord Patel’s vision for Yorkshire County Cricket Club and the collective determination to address issues with a range of positive actions. Change will not happen overnight, but I’m sure we can make Headingley roar again,” said Gough, who took 453 first-class wickets in his two spells (1989 to 2003 and 2007 to 2008) at Yorkshire.

Yorkshire President Lord Kamlesh Patel expressed his happiness over Gough’s appointment.

“We are delighted to welcome Darren back to the club, and are very pleased that he has taken on the job. As a former captain of the club, Darren’s influence on the Yorkshire and England teams was immense as a player. Infectious enthusiasm and the will to win will be so important as we aim to be the best on and off the pitch.

“As we embark on this journey with Darren, we want to involve everyone in the club and as many people as possible in shaping our direction. Together we are ready to embrace the opportunity and build a bright future for Yorkshire County Cricket Club.”
