Former Afghan officials announce government in exile; Amrulla Saleh will lead

Former officials of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, who left the war-torn nation after being taken over by the Taliban, announced the continuation of the Afghan government in exile headed by former Vice President Amarullah Saleh. The statement said that the occupation of Afghanistan by external factors is based on the historical responsibility of the Afghan government after consultation with the country’s elders; He decided to declare a government in exile, Khama Press reported.

According to the statement, the three powers of the government, executive, judicial and legislative, will become active soon.

It also announced its support for the Panjshir Resistance Front—the anti-Taliban front led by Ahmed Masood—and said that all embassies and consulates in Afghanistan would function normally.

The statement has been written and issued by leaders of the previous government, political leaders and other politicians, but the names of none have been disclosed, The Khama Press reported.

The Taliban said on Tuesday that they would temporarily adopt a constitution from the era of Muhammad Zahir Shah, which was ratified 57 years ago.

The Taliban captured Kabul on August 15, after an aggressive and swift advance against government forces amid the withdrawal of US and NATO troops from the country.
